Summer & Back To School Crafts

Hello crafty lovers! I have been checking things off my list, which is good. Now counting down the few weeks left of summer and how to spend our time crafting. While having coffee I came across this easy, nature loving craft tutorial and thought I would share it with you. It is for this lovely hanging birdbath tutorial!

Hey, you can even use this one for yourself book-blankets. Imagine making one of these for yourself and using the pocket for your coffee card! Perfect for after the kiddos are dropped off at school and you have time to run to the coffee shop for a break to read for an hour. When I make a version of this, I promise I will share.

The nice thing I found about my first visit to this website is they have so many categories and articles that are interesting from crafts, recipes, travel, printables, parties and more. Hello crafty friends, I am in between trips. Doing laundry, sending out bills, attending to house and squeezing in appointments like doctors and dentist that are hard to get to in the fall with school schedules. I hope this finds you all well and having a great summer. I came across this great homemade fruit leather tutorial and had to share along with my newest favorite food blog.

Homemade Baby Gifts

Remember the post I shared the tutorials for some baby gifts? Well if not here is the link to that post here. I wanted to share with you the end result of the tri fold diapers that were covered in the center with pretty fabric on the outside to make pretty burpees or clean ups for the mom to be.

I actually found the fabric at Walmart in their fabric department. It was pretty, suited a baby and in this case boy! They are all stitched up and ready for giving with a cute ribbon on top. I plan on purchasing a pretty basket or laundry basket and arranging the gifts into it. With a new baby a mom could easily use either for daily duties or catch alls.

I haven't had time yet, but plan on writing out the tutorial for the zipper pouch. It is big enough for mom to be to carry wipes, a few diapers, ointment when on a quick run, just in case of emergencies. It really is pretty easy! You can see the end result just behind the wipes.

The hardest thing is changing from the regular sewing foot to the zipper foot. You will have to read your manual or check out You Tube if you don't know how. Other wise it is all straight stitching, ironing and turning. Tutorial coming soon! You can; change the fabric if you need to make one for other uses. Easy Baby Blanket

Hi there, I hope this is finding you well. I came across this baby blanket tutorial from Above All Fabrics. I think I may try this trick she used for making the binding for the baby blanket from the bottom fabric.

It looks so easy and since binding quilts and blankets is something I don''t feel I have mastered quite well this seems to fit the bill! Under the video I will put a link to the tutorial. I hope you enjoy an easy way to making an easy baby gift or something special for your little one.

On her blog she has a tutorial and a pdf download to help you too with the making of this baby blanket.
Above All Fabrics Blog . Oh, I have to tell you I fell in love with some of the fabrics they carry in the shop!
We don't have anywhere to get fabrics other than a Walmart and a high end boutique that charges a fortune. If that is the case for you too, you might enjoy their fabric shop.

Summer Lasagna

Hello everyone! It has been quiet around here. Is everyone camping or getting ready to go camping for the 4th of July weekend? This is a quick and easy dish you could even prep ahead if you are going camping. It is easy lighter than lasagna and will fill up your hikers! But I just make now and then when we get a craving for something Italian in the summer. It is what I call Summer Lasagna~

I don't know where I spotted the recipe but it is almost as easy as making this collage of photos I took while cooking it! I can only give you my interpretation of the recipe it is one of those you look at once and go I've got it and spin your own twist to it!

Here is how it goes, If you have a home garden: Gather any fresh basil, garlic, zucchini and tomato from your garden. Give them a wash. (Or) purchase from the store or farmers market.

Needed items:
Tomatoes - two baskets of Roma tomatoes ( if not fresh you will need 1-2 cans chopped tomatoes *size small for 2-3 people, large cans for 3+people
1 small can tomato sauce
Basil *fresh - handful about 1/4 cup
Garlic- 3-4 heads *peel and chop
Italian seasonings to taste
zucchini 1-2 optional *sliced thinly
Ricotta Cheese Lowfat
Lasagna Noodles about 2-3 per person
Olive Oil 2 tbsp
Shredded Parmesan or Romano Cheese

Peel and chop garlic, chop zucchini and then saute together in olive oil until garlic is translucent. Add in fresh washed tomatoes or canned tomatoes and small can of sauce. Add seasonings to your taste. Keep it lighter than normal.
Bring to boil then reduce to simmer for approx. 30min.
About 5 min prior to serving toss into sauce fresh chopped basil.
*Cook lasagna noodles according to package and drain. Add a touch of butter to noodles so they don't stick. Do this step prior to sauce being done.

Plate the lasagna noodles, add sauce then Ricotta cheese *couple of tablespoons here and there. Then sprinkle with Shredded Parmesan cheese.

This is a simple way to have a version of Lasagna in the summer. The sauce is light, its simple to make and ready quick. No baking! You can put your own spin on this basic and simple recipe! I hope you enjoy it!

When it is super hot weather my Mr. makes a great shrimp cocktail. I hope to watch how he does it and share the recipe. It is with fresh avocado s, shrimp and some spicy goodness. That is my favorite summer dish! So far he hasn't shared the recipe. It is his summer treat he makes for us. Here's to hoping I can catch him while hes making it and share it with you!

I found the cutest fabric at Walmart of all places when I was picking up the tri fold diapers. (Which is great as who wants to use expensive fabrics when they will be for spits and clean ups.) I created a zipper bag similar to the ones above but bigger! I am hoping I took enough photos of the zipper bag I made as I was going along to share a tutorial. This zipper bag that I made was big enough for a few diapers, wipes, ointment, and a few of mom's things when on a quick run. That way if you want to create your own you'll see how. Art Bag

Artsy, Crafty, Re-cycled fabrics, my own pattern & Art Bag Creation.

Remember when I mentioned all those art bags & posted about all the wonderful inspiration? Well I haven't been in the painting mood lately, but I printed out something I painted onto muslin and created an art bag / purse using felt, burlap and fabric scraps I had laying around. I used some decorative machine embroidery. Although far from perfect my daughter Sammie fell in love with it. She asked me to make the straps so she could wear it from shoulder to hip. I thought I would share the results and a few steps I am going to take to make it better next time.

If you have ever printed something from your computer you will notice how sometimes the colors just don't match the image. That is just what happened here. It was pretty light on the muslin that I printed it on. But I used permanent felt tip markers to draw in shapes and color it up. I need to fix color prior to printing!

Well, you know how I hate to stop even where there are mistakes. I decided since I started and this was kind of like a pro to type any way to finish what I started instead of scrapping it. I love figuring out how to create patterns on my own. This image shared is the back where underneath the front flap is sewn in and connected.

Another thing I will change when I create my next one is the strap material. For this I didn't want to go out and purchase anything. I wanted to use felt I had, burlap from a recycled coffee sack, woven burlap scraps I had from the wedding table runner we made, and for the straps I had these great silk pants that were ripped which I cut and created them from. Added a vintage button from one of the grandma's stash & ta da.....

Hello there I hope your week is off to a good start creatively! I thought I would share this baby quilt I put together for my daughter who is having a boy. I didn't use a pattern I used a simple block style and on the back is one color then I used decorative stitching. This one is all machine quilted. I used vibrant fabrics with patterns when piecing it together. There are pinwheels, kites with suns, stars, stripes and squares. I guess I could of shot a better picture. When the bindings on I'll take another!

This baby quilt is a Toddler size quilt

You can see as I flip it over I stitched around the squares with a leaf - line pattern.

I made a matching little pillow and put the leaf pattern along the top and bottom of it.

Speaking of binding. That is something I need to get better at. On this quilt I just used a silk type blanket binding I made from fabrics I had here at home. I think I am going to make a special handmade quilt which will be smaller, baby size and just have to decide on the pattern, purchase materials and do a little research on binding. The one above is the kind the little one can take everywhere!

I thought I would share a You Tube Video to a baby quilt tutorial that has four parts to get you started on your own project. This is part one. You can see the others on You Tube if you like, they take you from start to finish. I'll keep you posted as I go along on my next project. Also I may also do an art quilt / hanging with some remnants I have laying around. Any how, summer is here! The kiddo is at home and I better get back to my mom duties. I hope you are finding time to fit some creative things in this summer!!

Little Things To Sew

I just found out 90% sure my daughter Krissy is having a boy! That means I can find little sewing projects to suit a boy. Now of course I have come across a few sewing projects that are for down the line like this little vest by Oliver + S. The cool thing about finding this pattern is they have a book full of projects suited for babies & kids. Which means I can sew some projects for baby's older sister too!

These projects are all wrapped up in one book; Oliver + S Little Things to Sew: 20 Classic Accessories and Toys for Children is filled with items you will want to make again and again. Projects include a hat with bear ears, a winter scarf with a slip-through closure, an explorer vest, a tutu, an art smock, a penguin backpack, a messenger bag, a red riding hood cape, a travel quilt, and many others.

My favorite project pick for sister is this puppet theater door hanger. It would be a perfect way for her to entertain herself while mom is busy with the baby and give mom a show at the same time. I am swooning over this book right now and to get my hands on some blue fabrics & this book! I am also planning on making a special blanket or quilt, promise to share more on that later.

Teriyaki Chicken With Broccoli Recipe

Sweet Ginger Broccoli Stir-Fry

I wanted to share this recipe I found from Weight Watchers Magazine, that is a few years back. It is below. But I am also going to share a link to a recipe I found on Hub pages that looks great, but not so quick or easy. It is a Sweet Ginger Broccoli Stir-Fry with Tofu or Chicken that serves 2. (The recipe is a little more involved and calls for ingredients you may have to stock your kitchen with from a special store or larger store) You will see the differences in the recipes. I love that they use orange zest and Thai Chili sauce in the Hub pages recipe. I can see using elements of that recipe to change this one up, but I gravitate to the simple for every day style cooking. So I hope all you creative cooks who are looking at quick and easy family meals have one less night to fret over cooking with these great recipes!

I made a few alterations but it was quick and easy prep time 15min. Cook time 10 min. and better yet, pleased all the family members. Weight Watchers call the recipe Teriyaki Chicken and Broccolini in my version I didn't use the ginger, and broccolini? I used broccoli heads trimmed. I also pre-cooked the broccoli just to crisp but able to fork in. See notes at end of the recipe.

This recipe serves 4.

1lb. skinless, boneless chicken breasts, cut into 1/4 inch strips
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp pepper
3 tsp. canola oil
1 red bell pepper thinly sliced
4 thin slices peeled fresh ginger, cut into slivers
3 garlic cloves, minced
1lb. broccolini, trimmed
1/2 cup water 1/3 teriyaki sauce

1.Sprinkle the chicken with salt and pepper. Heat in a large nonstick skillet over high. Pour 1tsp of the oil and swirl to coat the skillet; then add the chicken. Stir-fry until cooked through, about 3 minutes. Transfer to a plate; cover to keep warm.

2. Heat the remaining 2 tsp. oil in the skillet. Add the bell pepper and stir-fry until crisp, about 1 minute. Add the ginger and garlic stir-fry until fragrant, about 1 minute. *(this is the part I changed) Stir in Broccolini and water. Cover reduce the heat, and cook until the Broccolini is crisp-tender and the water has evaporated, about 3 minutes. Add the teriyaki sauce and chicken; cook, stirring constantly, until headed through, about 1 minute.

So I basically followed the directions except I * pre cooked the broccoli and eliminated the water/ broccoli step at the end. After stir-frying garlic & (ginger if you like) add broccoli heads, teriyaki sauce and chicken. Stir, constantly until headed through. * make rice if you like to serve with it if you like.

This summer I plan on doing sewing more frequently. I want to continue to teach Sammie some projects and my daughter Krissy is having a baby in December. This great Black Bean Burger from Gourmet every day ten-minute mains. *recipes by Gina Marie Mirglia Eriquez. Whew, hope I got that right. ( If anyone knows of a link on the web let me know) Now my 9yr old is pretty picky when it comes to eating! Which always makes it challenging. She loved this with the exception that she thought it was a bit spicy to her palette. But she didn't want the bun either, so maybe that intensified her taste of the burger. I loved them! I could even see using this recipe for a dip with tortilla chips or wrapped up in a corn tortilla! These are the best Black Bean Burger's with a Latin flair I have ever tasted. So without further adieu here is my recipe share with you!

Recipe:

2 (14oz) cans black beans, rinsed and drained, divided
3 Tbsp mayonaise
1/3 cup plain dried bread crumbs
2 tsp. ground cumin
1 tsp. dried oregano, crumbled
1/4 tsp. cayenne
1/4 cup finely chopped cilantro
3Tbsp vegetable oil
4 soft hamburger buns

Accompanied with sour cream, salsa and lettuce
The only adjustments I made to the recipe was to add thinly sliced cheese or shredded to your liking and sliced avocados.

Prep time approx 10-15min./ with a 10 min. cook time / Serves 4.

Directions:

Pulse 1 can beans in a food processor with mayonnaise, bread crumbs, cumin, oregano and cayenne until a coarse puree forms. Transfer to a bowl and stir in cilantro and remaining can of beans *drained. Form mixture into 4 patties.

Heat oil in a 12 inch heavy skillet * I used a non stick and it worked fine over a medium-high heat until it shimmers. Cook burgers until the outsides are crisp and lightly browned, turning once, about 5 minutes total.

Serve on buns with accompaniments. Add a side salad if you wish & your favorite beverage and you are set!
This is a quick, easy, healthy and Vegetarian meal! Bonn Appetite~

Love Notes and Wedding Poster

I also created Love Notes banner to be placed by their wedding poster they had out for everyone to sign a love note to the bride and groom on the matte board. On the cards that say Love Notes I glued at the top ribbon and placed some of her grandma and great-grandma's vintage buttons on them. Sorry, its not the best photograph. These last two are mine.

We set out an instant camera and the mustaches so everyone could team up and take photos while having fun and also add a note to the couple if they wished. This was a big hit and instant fun!!

Wedding Flowers & Flower Photography

Dearest blogging friends, I hope this finds you well. I have been so busy and not meaning to take such a long break but, I have had things that have needed my attention. A dry run for the wedding flowers was done, I spent some time with Sammie on spring break and then I set to organizing around here. As I mentioned before I have my eldest daughter's wedding coming up this month. Check lists are getting done, new items and projects being added. So my artwork has been set to the side for the moment, yet I am managing to stay creative in helping with the wedding. I managed to take some flower photographs of some of our wedding choices.

Today I did take the time to alter some of photographs that I took of the wedding flowers we are choosing for the table top arrangements and played with them giving them some textures and such, but ever so lightly so you could see the beauty of these flowers. Top of the list are the beautiful blooms that May has to offer. Lilacs on their stems, Ranuculus, Gerbena and Vintage Roses. The wedding flower pallet that Laura chose is a soft pastels, with lavenders, peaches and pinks.

Although you can get Ranunculus in May you have to get them three days ahead to let them open and their heads are smaller, but they are such a beautiful flower, it will be well worth the extra care. The Gerbena Daisy is so beautiful with its big head I would love to grow some to take photographs of as they are simple beauties. I didn't know they are a member of the sunflower family until I was reading about them. Did you know that fact? Then the true wedding flower hits that we chose were the vintage roses in a blush and the Lilacs on their stems. The smell of these beauties is soft, fragrant and colors are a beautiful. They all lasted well over a week with changing the water and feeding them.

I was surfing around looking for ideas for organization and spring cleaning. My house is in need of a good spring cleaning! I came across some simple DIY's and spring inspiration my house could use.

This idea is actually so simple. I don't know why I have never done this. I love pretty papers and here is an easy way to display them as they are just by decoupaging them onto canvas. Well Michelle Wooderson made these little button cards that were paper crafted, it was love at first sight. I have always wondered what to do with my grandma's vintage buttons that sit in a jar or little box only to look at once in awhile. Now I am inspired to make button cards and put them in a display to hang on the wall!

Birthday Book and Felt Gifts

Hello Dear Readers, Just a quick post today of some little gifts I have been sewing for my three year old granddaughter Audrey. This is a felt and fabric with ribbon necklace and a wrist cuff out of felt. I attached the cuff to the necklace and added the little cupie doll gift tag.

This is the cover of the birthday book in felt with papers and lace.

This is the first page I added the little deer, she doesn't read yet and loves animals. The birthday book was inspired from the previous post. I made it quickly with scraps of felt, paper and lace. It was very easy.

In this strip of photos you can see some of the other pages. I created a painted page and scanned and cut out the cupcake image and heart with flowers. On the last image I left a spot to write a little note to my dear little one. I also included a photograph of her in her gym class. She will be three. Hard to believe Audrey and my daughter Sammie are only six years apart. It makes for much fun when we all get together!

Sammie has a science fair tonight and I have been busy with other things. Today I shared some photography on my other blog. Hello Dear Readers, I have to admit it almost feels like I am all over the place with inspiration. "sigh"
What can I say. If I see something I think might interest you I share it. I never get bored looking at inspiration and the last few weeks I have gotten caught up on just that! When you live in a dry climate you can always use a great moisturizer! And even if you don't live where there is a dry climate it is almost that time of year to be needing some with spring and summer on its way. How great would it be to make some of your own? Well thanks to Lousia Shafia and her tutorial on Ready Made you can! Honestly I am going to try this! How about you?

When I saw this I thought what a simple project for spring and summer outdoor dining. This bandanna table runner tutorial. Is great for beginner sewers and I can see using other bandannas for reusable napkins too. I just did a google search and you can purchase bandannas for $7.99 per dozen at Oriental Trading Co and another supplier is Tan's Club. Imagine what you can find if you really look. I can also see going to my local Pier One Imports or Cost Plus Imports and finding pretty napkins to use. This is going on my spring to do list. I promise to share when I do it.

This is a painted collage I have in progress called Little One. I first painted the background surface. Then the canvas has vintage images of birds and flowers from scrap book papers which I have painted over in parts after gluing them down. I also used a little gold leaf in the inside of the flowers. I painted the stem the bird is on and the leaf. I stamped here and there. I also used some spray ink for a vintage feel. I am not sure that I am completely done. I am considering coll-aging images to the sides. I know four people having babies and I am trying to put together some crafty gifts. This is done on a 6x6 canvas. Honestly this is a project anyone can do. Finding images at craft stores on paper or card stock is so easy these days. One of my favorites K & Company has come out with a whole line of nature inspired goodies in their Flora & Fauna Collection. You know they had me once I saw their bird nests. More baby love for Little One's coming soon. I am inspired to find some fabrics in this palette chart I made shown above to make some burping cloths.

Oatmeal Cookies & A Spot of Tea

Yes, I am sharing my story and version of these oatmeal cookies pictured above. I honestly was looking for a simple Oatmeal Cookie Recipe. But, everyone wants to put fruit and nuts in them. Granted I love pecans but did my pantry have any? No! Since my little one who is not so little any more she is 8yr old had yesterday off of school we decided to have a pj baking party! These cookies pictured are the outcome.

The recipe I used was my version of trying the one listed below by the Barefoot Contessa. I guess I could say thank goodness I didn't have pecans because with kids do you really have time to toast nuts? I usually have Sammie help me grab everything we need and plunk it on the clean table and we begin. I help Sammie measure out all the dry ingredients. Then we measure in a bowl all *wet ingredients IE the butter, sugars, egg, vanilla. She loves cracking eggs and has gotten quite good at it. Mix it together, cookie sheet, bake and of course taste! Tasting is the best part!

I have to say this isn't quite the Quaker Oats Recipe I have and there are only a few differences. #1 being less brown sugar and what I think that does is creates a firmer cookie. Crisp on the outside and firmer in the inside. A great dunking Oatmeal Cookie. So maybe a spot of tea or coffee, your favorite book and you'll have the perfect recipe. Oh, back to what I did. Literally cut the recipe in half, no nuts or raisins. That is it! Definitely worth trying, but I think I will stick to my good old fashion Quaker Oats Recipe next time! * minus the nutmeg that is! When I come up with my favorite version I promise to post it in the recipes. Hey, nothing wrong with any excuse to make cookies right?

Triple Lemon Blueberry Cake

Here is a super delicious looking Triple Lemon Blueberry cake! It may be too soon to think Easter but spring and my birthday are right around the corner. Well speaking of lemons I just love this photograph. It has me wanting to plant a lemon tree only problem is it gets too cold in the winter. Just enough for an occasional snow to fall but not stay on the ground and the cold lasts long enough to freeze a lemon tree. If I lived west of here I would be outside planting that tree right now! Could that be lemon jelly in the jars? Lemon Love!

Hi Friends! This is a fresh and easy Pesto Pasta Recipe I wanted to share with you it was so easy and delicious. Plus the recipe has a little twist of adding lemon to it. It simply gives it a refreshing and light quality that was not over powering but just right! I think you'll love it! I meant to post it this past Sunday but we went to the beach before it rained. With a week of rain and cold weather impending how could we resist a mini jaunt to one of my favorite places. I have some photographs to share with you soon! So without further adieu here is the recipe! I hope you try it & be sure and let me know if you like it. Light and just right for spring~

Lighter Pesto Pasta

This recipe makes 3/4 cup. I doubled it and had left over which I used as a tapenade.

3 cups tightly packed fresh basil leaves ( two ounces total)

3 tbsp. walnut pieces

3 tbsp. grated Parmesan cheese

2 garlic cloves, peeled

1 tbsp. fresh lemon juice

coarse salt and ground pepper

3tbsp extra-virgin olive oil

1. In a food processor combine basil, walnuts, Parmesan cheese, garlic, lemon juice, and 3 tablespoons water: season with salt and pepper. Puree until a paste forms

2. with motor running add olive oil in a thin stream . Process until smooth, about 1minute

There you go it's that simple, quick and easy~

Cook noodles whole wheat or regular spaghetti to box directions. Add in prepared pesto, stir and serve with a green salad and your favorite beverage. This recipe I didn't alter at all, except for my ending. It was from Martha Stewart 's Every Day Foods App.

Valentines Hearts

I crafted several different hearts. Ones with felt and paper, ribbon and lace. Ones with burlap, paper, felt and little bits of this and that. Then I made felt ones where I embroidered with the sewing machine and added ribbon and these cute little scrap book angels I found. I making a few cards and I promise to share those with you. I am not the best at paper crafts but I love them still the same! It can be so much fun.
No super bowl Sunday for me! Just a girly day full of pedicures and then crafting. Yes, you have to love the spring air that is upon us our toes bursting to toss the tennis shoes for flip flops. Sammie picked this mermaid blue and we had to match. I love when she lets me pamper her sometimes. She isn't the most girly, girl I have raised. But, she is starting to love learning to cook and bake. Or....Hm mm, could it be the end results?

Any how. What are you crafting these days? Do you have any special plans for Valentine's Day? Or do you just plan a nice dinner at home with something sweet after? Like me. I would love to know~

I came across this tutorial for using scraps to make a heart banner pillow and if you sew who doesn't have scraps right! Or if you sew and you don't have any scraps laying around you know you'll use any excuse to find more cute fabrics. It is so cute and simple I just had to share this tutorial with you. You can find the tutorial right here at Ucreate where Amy had a creative guest post. For me I think I am going to use this idea and spin a twist on it for a baby pillow and make a matching baby quilt. Hope I am not being to ambitious with all my spring to dos but, I know three ladies having babies right now and think since they know if its a boy or girl I can find some left over fabrics to tie into their themes. I promise to share when complete. And I can't wait to share the wedding banner I just did. I am just having to add the ribbon on once I find the right color & then I can share some photographs with you.

Valentines Heart "Felt Gift Card Holder"

I thought I would share with you one of the first of a few Valentine's Hearts gift card holders I am making. I used felt material for these but any material could work. I have left the top open to add a gift card in. These are super simple to make. You could even sew these by hand if you wish. No pattern is necessary.
Just cut your hearts to the size you would like. First cut out one of the heart, then a second one was cut out slightly bigger with pinking sheers I sewed the two together using an embroidery heart stitch. It also would be cute in a zig zag stitch. I decided to put a bow and a button on this one. I have a couple more to share in the next few days. Hope you enjoyed a little gift card inspiration for your Valentine's Day~

I saw this image when I was searching for wedding banners and this shop owner had this bird garland for sale. Here is the image she had to sell her garland. So I was just swooning over how she marketed it~
How could I not share? She sells artwork, reproduction prints and recycled paper goods. She has the sweetest bird watercolors.
I have to say I am smitten with the Etsy sellers* wedding banners creativity and banner choices. It almost makes me just want to buy one, but hey what fun would that be?

So my search continued and of course the Knotty Bride had some DIY links to help spin my wheels even more!

Then of course Martha Stewart has her Wedding DIY with templates for projects. Alright I don't need this sign for the wedding I am helping with but, I had to share. How cute is that?!!

Now my head is spinning with Wedding Banner Ideas and Inspiration! So when I get to crafting my wedding banner for my daughter I promise to post what I created and hope it is at least half as good! Still deciding on paper, fabric, felt and what ribbons. Just married, love birds, true love, Mr. and Mrs., forever, love, amore..... you get the idea. Well I can't wait until the wedding is over and we are looking at the pictures with the banners in it! But until then the planning, creating and DIY will continue~

Recipe "Shrimp and Zucchini Tostadas"

Its that time again to share another new recipe I tested out. This one is from Martha Stewart. It is quick, easy and doesn't disappoint! I made a few modifications with two minor changes* for ease and preference! I am sure fresh shrimp would be great but if you are on a time crunch and haven't found any on sale frozen is a great alternative, just picking up a bag of prepared frozen shrimp on sale and having it in your freezer for a few recipes depending on the amount you use. I also chose to use the shredded Mexican cheese as we usually have it on hand * great for quesadillas, but mostly because Sammie loves the cheddar cheese. It gives it a bit more color on the tortilla verses the image shown here.

4 burrito-size flour tortillas (8-inch)
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese (4 ounces) * I used Shredded Mexican Cheese
1 garlic clove, minced
2 medium zucchini, quartered lengthwise and thinly sliced
Coarse salt and ground pepper
1 pound large peeled and deveined shrimp * I used frozen prepared and defrosted per directions on package
1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
1/2 cup sour cream
3 scallions, thinly sliced

Preheat oven to 475 degrees.

Place tortillas on two large baking sheets. Brush with 1 tablespoon oil and sprinkle with cheese. Bake until cheese is melted and tortillas are crisp, 3 to 5 minutes.

In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon oil over medium-high. Add garlic and zucchini; season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring frequently, until zucchini is crisp-tender, 2 to 4 minutes. Add shrimp and cook, stirring frequently, until shrimp are opaque throughout, about 3 minutes. Stir in lime juice. Spoon shrimp mixture over tortillas and top with sour cream and scallions.

This recipe is quick, easy and tastes amazing. Prep/ to Serve time approx 25-30min. Honestly I can see I can see this as a great spring / summer dish for serving on the patio. Add a little rice and salad on the side with a pitcher of margaritas and a few friends, well you get the picture! We just had them as is and it was filling and delicious. Do you ever feel like you need a gnome? What is the definition of a gnome any way?
A legendary creature resembling a tiny old man; lives in the depths of the earth and guards buried treasure.
So you are wondering why I am asking you this?

Well for 1. I have always loved images of these little creatures, men. 2. I could of used a guard to protect my buried treasure on my computer and blog. OK, I may of lost you but let me reel you back in. I had a whim, yes the kind that blows in with a breeze and takes over like a hurricane. My whim was to redo my header, but what does that have to do with gnomes? Well, you see I misplaced in my 11,000 images my header. Yep, then I tried to retrieve it from the original place and it didn't fit properly, then I tried to re size it. Are you starting to see where I am going with this? Well, suffice to say nothing was going my way. So temporarily until I decide if I am going to just to an entire blog makeover or locate my original header and make it fit it will be like it is. I won't say I am happy, but the next time I am having a whim I am asking a gnome for some protective help!

Quick and Easy Recipes "Chicken Teriyaki"

Well my family declared enough with the same menus! So I have been trying to try quick and easy recipes to keep them pleased. No easy feat. I made a easy sloppy joes recipe. I thought it was good, Sammie thought it was ok and Papa bear well he said I like the flavor of the ones from the store! What??? Really, no one ever made you homemade sloppy joes? and you really prefer the ones from the store? Well I guess I won't be making that recipe again but this one from Martha Stewart Everyday was a winner from even for our most particular, picky eaters.

So I thought I would share it with you it is super easy but I think that you need to watch the level of where you place your baking sheet. Now bare with me, in my oven 4" was too close from the top and when I checked they had gotten so hot it caught on fire. So first I grabbed the pan out and then lowered the rack! Whew! Fired averted!! But yes, I did set off the smoke detectors. Ok, I can laugh now but at the time not so funny at the time. Now on to the recipe;
Serving Size 1 - *( so for our house we picked up a package of 12 wings and had no left overs. Served 3)
wings were separated at the joint
Coarse salt
Fresh Pepper
2 Tbsp. reduced -sodium soy sauce (* ours was regular soy sauce)
2 Tbsp. honey
2 Tbsp. rice vinegar *(ours was seasoned rice vinegar and it worked out fine)

In addition I cooked rice for 4 people and broccoli to complete the dish.

1. Heat the broiler with 4 " from the heat * See note above!!
Arrange wings on an aluminum - foil - lined rimmed baking sheet. Season with the salt and pepper. Broil turning once, until lightly browned and tender, about 20 minutes.

2. In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, honey and vinegar. Reserve 2 Tbsp. for dipping.

3. Remove wings from the broiler; brush with remaining sauce. Return to broiler turning and brushing sauce twice., until browned and glazed. 2-4minutes. Brush with pan juices before serving.

During the 20 min. cooking period I made my rice and broccoli and plated them on the side to complete the meal. This was a very quick, easy and great meal that everyone enjoyed!

Vintage Towel Tutorial via Lovely Nest Designs

January is definitely the time to think about the beginning of spring cleaning and easy sewing! When we are cleaning up from the holidays and sprucing up our homes to be fresh in the new year we are constantly using towels. Towel use not just for cleaning but for after washing our hands from doing projects and keeping germ free. I came across this cute little sewing tutorial about how to liven up towels and make them look vintage. How perfect for using those bits of lace, pom poms and other edgings collected from grandma or a left over art project!

Now Jamie also has a handsewn Spring Fling Garland Tutorial I just love this idea especially with the image of having the close pins on the garland. I can see making one of these for oldest daughters up coming wedding where she can have guests pin love notes on the garland ~ But she has examples of other decorative uses you might like for your home!

Happy New Year! I thought I would share a snapshot of our holidays. Baking cupcakes, wrapping packages, Christmas with the newlyweds, visiting family, good food, window shopping, browsing the bookstore & finding new books to read, playing lots of monopoly, bundling up and blowing bubbles and dreaming in the New Year with Big Dreams!! While you are warming up to the new year you might like to try this potato soup recipe and a salad~
Honestly the easiest and best tasting recipes. Yum!

Baked Potato Soup
Four Servings, prep time 10min, cook time 20min (*you can modify as you like, last 3 ingredients I leave out)

Ingredients

3 bacon strips, diced
1 small onion, chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon dried basil
1/2 teaspoon pepper
3 cups chicken broth
2 large baked potatoes, peeled and cubed
1 cup half-and-half cream
1/2 teaspoon hot pepper sauce
Shredded Cheddar cheese
Minced fresh parsley

Directions

In a large saucepan, cook bacon until crisp. Drain, reserving 1 tablespoon drippings. Set bacon aside. Saute onion and garlic in the drippings until tender. Stir in flour, salt, basil and pepper; mix well. Gradually add broth. Bring to boil; boil and stir for 2 minutes. Add the potatoes, cream and hot pepper sauce; heat through but do not boil. Garnish with bacon, cheese and parsley. All Recipes.com

* 1 garlic clove, sliced in 1/2
* 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
* 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
* Small splash soy sauce
* Salt and freshly ground black pepper
* 3 tablespoons olive oil

Directions

3 cups mixed greens, the darker the better (not iceberg)

Rub the inside of a large wooden bowl with the garlic clove and then either discard it or save it for another use. Put the mustard in the bowl and whisk in the balsamic vinegar and soy sauce (a French secret!) vigorously for about 10 seconds to get a creamy consistency. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Drizzle in the olive oil as slowly as possible with 1 hand while whisking as quickly as possible with the other hand to emulsify. Lay the salad greens on top of the dressing and toss just before serving. Food Network

Christmas Cookie Recipes "The Chocolates"

This week I am going to do a round up of my favorite cookie recipes. With school going on break in a week it is a tradition in our house to put on our aprons, warm up the oven and bake the day away. Nothing says Christmas is right around the corner more than the wonderful smells of fresh baked cookies! Then when unexpected company drops in how easy is it to offer a treat with a cup of milk, coffee or tea~

Chocolate Peppermint Crinkle Cookies * corrected / adjusted version as posted on bakersroyal.com

Yields 3 dozen cookies

1 3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons spooned and leveled bleached all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
8 ounces semi-sweet chocolate, finely chopped
2 3/4 cups sugar, divide
1/4 cup canola oil
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
2 tablespoons light corn syrup
2 large eggs
1 large egg yolk
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1 ½ tablespoons of peppermint extract
1 cup sugar

Instructions:

In a medium bowl, beat together well the flour, baking powder, and salt; set aside. Melt the chocolate in the microwave on 50 percent power for 1 minute, stir, and microwave for 15 seconds more and stir; set aside.
In a mixer with the paddle attachment, beat together 2 1/2 cups of the sugar, the oil, butter and corn syrup to blend. Beat in the eggs, egg yolk, vanilla and peppermint extract. Then on low, beat in the melted chocolate. Add the flour mixture and beat in on low speed. Wrap the dough in plastic and refrigerate for several hours or overnight.
Heat oven to 325 degrees F. Line bakesheet with parchment. Take out about one-quarter of the dough at a time to shape. Roll the dough into 2 inch balls. Pour the remaining 1/4 cup granulated sugar into one bowl and the confectioners’ sugar in another bowl. Roll each cookie dough ball lightly in granulated sugar first, then very heavily in confectioners’ sugar. (By rolling in plain sugar first, the confectioners’ sugar does not soak in so much and stays on the surface better).
Arrange cookies 2 inches apart on the foil. For crisp cookies, bake 12 to 14 minutes. For a chewier cookie, bake 10-12 minutes. Bake one sheet at a time.

Double Chocolate Chip Cookies~This is a melt in your mouth almost brownie like cookie sure to please any chocolate lover!
Yields 40
Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 cup NESTLÉ® TOLL HOUSE® Baking Cocoa
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup (2 sticks) butter or margarine, softened
2/3 cup granulated sugar
2/3 cup packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 large eggs
1 3/4 cups (11.5-oz. pkg.) NESTLÉ® TOLL HOUSE® Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chunks

Directions

PREHEAT oven to 350º F.

COMBINE flour, cocoa, baking soda and salt in medium bowl. Beat butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar and vanilla extract in large mixer bowl until creamy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Gradually beat in flour mixture. Stir in chunks. Drop by rounded tablespoon onto ungreased baking sheets.

BAKE for 9 to 11 minutes or until cookies are puffed and centers are set but still soft. Cool on baking sheets for 2 minutes; remove to wire racks to cool completely.

Original Chocolate Chip Cookie
Yields 60
Ingredients

2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened
3/4 cup granulated sugar
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 large eggs
2 cups (12-oz. pkg.) NESTLÉ® TOLL HOUSE® Semi-Sweet Chocolate Morsels
1 cup chopped nuts

Directions

PREHEAT oven to 375° F.

COMBINE flour, baking soda and salt in small bowl. Beat butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar and vanilla extract in large mixer bowl until creamy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Gradually beat in flour mixture. Stir in morsels and nuts. Drop by rounded tablespoon onto ungreased baking sheets.

BAKE for 9 to 11 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on baking sheets for 2 minutes; remove to wire racks to cool completely.

PAN COOKIE VARIATION: Grease 15 x 10-inch jelly-roll pan. Prepare dough as above. Spread into prepared pan. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until golden brown. Cool in pan on wire rack. Makes 4 dozen bars.

SLICE AND BAKE COOKIE VARIATION:
PREPARE dough as above. Divide in half; wrap in waxed paper. Refrigerate for 1 hour or until firm. Shape each half into 15-inch log; wrap in wax paper. Refrigerate for 30 minutes.* Preheat oven to 375° F. Cut into 1/2-inch-thick slices; place on ungreased baking sheets. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on baking sheets for 2 minutes; remove to wire racks to cool completely. Makes about 5 dozen cookies.

* May be stored in refrigerator for up to 1 week or in freezer for up to 8 weeks.

FOR HIGH ALTITUDE BAKING (5,200 feet): Increase flour to 2 1/2 cups. Add 2 teaspoons water with flour and reduce both granulated sugar and brown sugar to 2/3 cup each. Bake drop cookies for 8 to 10 minutes and pan cookie for 17 to 19 minutes.

Hello Friends, I honestly can say I am getting slowly & surely back into the swing of sewing. Yes, they may be little projects but I am loving them none the less. Contemplating you say. Yes, after being under the weather with the achy, chills, fever & major headaches since Thanksgiving that is just what I am doing! This is how it all began: I had managed to get all the shopping & cooking done, serve the dinner, eat a little with the family and then I went to lay down to get rid of a headache for I thought for 15 minutes when ca-pow! Two hours slipped by & then when I awoke the tree was up with lights on it and the decorating began. I ended up watching and finishing details just last night. This is actually the first day I can say I actually feel better, but not 100%. Now I am contemplating where to get caught up first. Of course the laundry is up there on the list & telling my blogging friends I haven't gone away. So my posts are sparse this week but I hope you understand. I feel like I have been in the land of the lost & one thing is for sure I don't want to go back!! I will count my blessings today as what ever I had has seemed to have passed and cross my fingers no one else will get sick. If I had a magic wand I would rid the land of illness and suffering~ but, since I don't I just wish you good health this season & hope this finds you well.

Honestly where does the time go? I have been crafting, journaling and painting meanwhile my house has been collecting dust bunnies, getting disorganized and just in plain need of assistance.
